Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking outstanding applicants for a postdoctoral position to participate in the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider in Tsukuba, Japan. The collaboration is currently preparing for first beam in early 2016, with first collisions expected in 2017. The main goals of the experiment are to study CP violation and to search for new phenomena in rare decays. The collaboration expects to collect up to 50 ab-1, with data rates that rival or exceed those of the LHC experiments today.
The PNNL group has leading roles in the development of the imaging time-of-propagation detector, networking and distributed computing, and physics studies of early data. The successful candidate will take a leading role in a physics analysis that is well aligned with these efforts. She or he will make significant contributions to the development of the DIRAC applications that facilitate distributed data management and the efficient operation of Belle II software on different clouds and the LHC Compute Grid. A strong background in data analysis, and experience in C++ and Python programming are requirements for this role. Knowledge of the DIRAC middleware is preferred.
We seek applicants with excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will present the results of their research in collaboration meetings and international workshops, and prepare publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Other Members of the group hold leading roles in the Project 8, nEXO, ADMX, SuperCDMS and MiniCLEAN collaborations. Synergistic activities with these or other PNNL groups engaged in national security, detector development and other Laboratory priorities are explicitly encouraged.
.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
.
Preferred Qualifications
Technical Expertise: Experience in HEP data analysis, C++, Python required. Knowledge of DIRAC preferred.
Level of Responsibility: Personal contributor to experimental analysis, and publication of results.
Breadth of Relevant Technical Knowledge: Collider-based Particle Physics
Minimum Education/Experience: Ph.D. in particle physics
The position requires domestic and international travel, and activities outside normal working hours. The position is based on the PNNL Richland Campus, but frequent travel to Japan should be expected.
The principal responsibilities of the chosen researcher are to work constructively with colleagues in the international research community. The post-doctoral fellow will be mentored by one of the senior researchers within the RDNS group. It is expected that the successful candidate will share responsibilities for the mentoring of summer students.
.
