Higgs Boson Physics with the CMS Experiment - Student at Vienna, OAW

Job description:
The CMS group of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria, is looking for outstanding applicants with a background in high energy physics to fill a PhD student position. The successful candidate will play a major role in the efforts to discover the decay of the Higgs boson in pairs of tau leptons and, if successful, to measure its properties. The main task will be to contribute to the development of a multivariate analysis and to apply it to the CMS data to be collected during LHC Run 2.


Scientific Environment

The Institute of High Energy Physics (HEPHY) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria, performs a rich experimental particle physics program participating in accelerator- and non-accelerator-based experiments. The institute has a major involvement in CMS at CERN and in the Belle / Belle II experiment at KEK. A new experimental group working on direct Dark Matter detection has recently been created. A theory group completes the research profile of the institute.

Involvement in CMS

The Institute of High Energy Physics is one of the founding members of the CMS Collaboration. We have been strongly involved in the design, construction and operation of two of the major components of the experiment: the trigger system and the tracking detector. Our experience in building silicon-based detectors, the construction of FPGA-based hardware and development of the appropriate firmware together with our expertise in reconstruction algorithms and its implementation in software allow us to play a leading role in the collaboration. The Institute of High Energy Physics is also strongly involved in CMS data analysis, in particular searches for SUSY signatures  and their interpretation in the context of simplified models, Quarkonia studies and studies of the decay properties of the Higgs boson.

Supplementary Material to the positions advertised above can be found at www.hephy.at/user/mflechl/phd_higgs/. The remuneration follows the scheme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The annual income (“Bruttojahresgehalt”) for a PhD position will be at 28 348 € / year. The position will be located  in Vienna and opened for a period of three years.
