PNNL is seeking an outstanding post-doctoral researcher to participate in development of the nEXO neutrinoless double beta decay experiment as a member of the Radiation Detection & Nuclear Sciences (RD&NS) Group.

The ideal candidate will have experience in experimental analysis, event simulation, and background modeling of low background liquid xenon time projection chambers. It is expected the post-doctoral researcher will work closely with the nEXO Collaboration to inform the experimental approach based on these activities.

A focus of the work will include employing simulation tools (e.g., Geant4, MCNP, and/or RAT) to model and estimate the backgrounds in the nEXO experiment. A demonstrated ability to develop simulation and analysis software (e.g., C++ code) is sought. A significant long-term goal is to use measured background concentrations in component materials to both predict and ultimately constrain the experimental background model. The post-doctoral researcher is expected to prepare and publish their results as part of the nEXO Collaboration. Travel to present at nEXO Collaboration meetings and public physics research conferences is expected so candidates with strong communication skills are highly desirable.

The post-doctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to participate in the RD&NS Group’s applied radiation detection programs. These programs provide many hands-on laboratory instrumentation development opportunities including working in the PNNL shallow underground laboratory cleanroom.
