Field of Interest:hep-ex, hep-ph
Experiments:CERN-LHC-ATLAS
Deadline: 2016-01-10
Region: Europe
Job description:
The Albert Einstein Center for Fundamental Physics (AEC) and Laboratory for High Energy Physics (LHEP) at the University of Bern invite applications for an immediate opening for a PhD student position.
The successful candidate is expected to play an active role in the development, construction and testing of a prototype for a novel Thin Time-of-flight Positron Emission Tomography (TT-PET) device based on silicon pixel detectors developed for upgrades of the ATLAS detector at the LHC.
The LHEP/AEC is actively involved in the development of particle detectors, among many e.g. for the recent construction and installation of a new pixel detector layer in the ATLAS detector (IBL). We are also strongly involved in the R&D of new sensors for the high luminosity upgrades of the ATLAS central tracker. It is the availability of new generations of these solid-state detectors based on silicon, in combination with fast and low noise readout electronics, which opens the opportunity to apply this technology to medical imaging.
The program involves close collaboration with the other detector development groups, further projects on applications of particle physics methods, the medical physics group and the ATLAS group.
A Master degree (or equivalent) in particle physics or medical physics is required. Experience with silicon detectors, their readout and with C++/object-oriented programming is desirable.
Candidates are requested to send a short letter of application, CV and the names and e-mail addresses of three references (no letters required) to:
Irene Neeser, neeser@lhep.unibe.ch
Deadline for applications is Jan 10th, 2016.
For further questions about the position contact: Prof. Dr. M. Weber, weber@lhep.unibe.ch
