Job description:
The Department of Physics and the International Center for Hadron Astrophysics (ICEHAP), Chiba University, invites applicants for a research associate to work with the IceCube and the ARA neutrino experiment. The IceCube group in the Chiba University has played a major role to search for ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos, leading to the first discovery of PeV neutrinos and the most stringent constraints on EeV-energy neutrino emissions from the highest energy cosmic rays. The Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) is a new detector deployed at the South Pole in adjacent to the IceCube site. ARA is designed to detect higher energy neutrinos using radio-frequency signal to cover the area more than 10 times larger than IceCube. The main energy of neutrinos ARA searches for ranges from 100 PeV to 100 EeV. We are making strong commitments to build and assemble the radio detectors to further expand the instrumentation array. A partial array consisting of three stations is now taking data. The next detector deployment is expected to take place in 2017.
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in high-energy physics, particle astrophysics, or the related fields. Strong skills in both physics analyses and hardware developments would be advantageous. The successful applicant is expected to contribute development and calibration of the ARA detectors, and to make important contributions to analysis of the data from the partially deployed ARA detector array
and the completed IceCube detector. The review of applications will begin January 1, 2016 but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance up to September 31, 2018.
