Experiments:BEPC-BES-III, GlueX
Deadline: 2015-12-01
Region: North America
Job description:
Our group at Indiana University anticipates several open Ph.D. positions beginning in the Fall of 2016. We are exploring the properties of Quantum Chromodynamics by conducting experiments to produce exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. This has recently become a very active and exciting field with the discovery of several tetraquark and pentaquark candidates and many other phenomena still to be understood.
We are working on two experiments in parallel: BESIII and GlueX. The BESIII Experiment is located at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Beijing, China and uses electron and positron annihilation to produce pairs of charm and anticharm quarks. GlueX is at Jefferson National Lab in Newport News, VA and is currently in the commissioning stage. It will use high-energy photons to search for exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. We currently hold leadership positions in both of these experiments, so Ph.D. students in our group have the opportunity to become intimately involved in all aspects of the experiments, from maintaining and calibrating the detectors to collecting and analyzing the data to publishing and reviewing analysis results.
There are also many opportunities for travel to work at both facilities, to present results at conferences, and to attend summer schools.
If you are interested, please contact Ryan Mitchell (remitche@indiana.edu) or Matt Shepherd (mashephe@indiana.edu). The application deadline is December 1, 2015 for international applications January 15, 2016 for domestic applications. Apply using this website:
