Job description:
The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Dark Matter Group has an immediate opening for a Research Associate to complete the construction and initiate the science program. LZ is a liquid xenon time projection chamber with a 7-ton active target that will provide unprecedented sensitivity to dark matter. The experiment will be located in the Davis Campus at the 4850’ level in the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) with turn on in early 2020. The SLAC group is responsible for a number of key deliverables, including a dedicated gas-charcoal chromatography purification system to remove radioactive krypton from the target; custom woven mesh grids for the central detector; a system test program to verify detector components in gas and liquid xenon; and offline software, reconstruction, and analysis tools. The initial period of work will focus on the krypton removal program at SLAC, involving hardware integration, PLC controls, and process development and tuning. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work across this full program, including commissioning, operations, and science analysis, present technical and physics results at conferences and prepare them for publication. Selection of candidates will start April 15, 2018 and the processing of applications will continue until the position is filled.A Ph.D. in physics or equivalent is required.
