We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.
We are strategic risk takers, innovators and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.
The Electrical Engineering Department (EED) in the Particle Physics Division supports a wide variety of experiments and High Energy Physics projects at Fermilab as well as projects at other locations. The department works on detector front-end electronics for experiments such as CDF, DZero, Minerva, DUNE, Mu2E, and CMS at CERN. Additional design work is also done on astrophysics projects such as Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Cryogenic Dark Matter Search, and Dark Energy Survey. Support is provided for starting new experiments in terms of consulting and infrastructure design. Long-term support is provided on most electronic aspects of the two current colliding beams experiments, CDF and DZero. When requested, EED also supports projects in the Beams Division relating to accelerator instrumentation.
Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) design at Fermilab is concentrated in the Electrical Engineering Department within the Particle Physics Division (PPD). The ASIC group had its beginnings in the late 1980's doing semicustom bipolar chip design. Since then, full custom designs have been done in various CMOS and BiCMOS processes. Numerous chip designs have been completed for Fermilab experiments (CDF, Dzero, KTEV, MINOS) as well as for CERN and other special projects. The ASIC group has 6 experienced designers doing design and layout of analog, and mixed analog/digital circuits as well as silicon detectors. Currently, much work is being done on radiation hard circuits > 30 Mrads designed in commercial deep sub-micron processes. In addition, the group has led the HEP community in the development of 3D integrated circuits. The ASIC design team uses modern design tools from vendors such as Cadence, Mentor, and Synopsys.
Fermilab’s ASIC Development Group in the Electrical Engineering Department of the Particle Physics Division’s (PPD) seeks a motivated Senior ASIC Development Engineer to lead and/or contribute to research activities and engineering work focused on radiation detector instrumentation.
You Will:
