Job description:
The activities of the Theory group of Nikhef include higher order calculations and jet physics in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics, parton distribution functions, 3D imaging of the proton, flavour physics, gravity, and cosmology, among others. The Nikhef theory group and Nikhef as a laboratory provide a stimulating environment with many seminars, colloquia, and journal club meetings. More information about Nikhef’s theory group can be found at https://www.nikhef.nl/pub/theory/general.html.
The position is funded through the NWO-Vidi project ”Decoding singularities of Feynman graphs”, with Dr. Franz Herzog as Principal Investigator. The project concerns the calculation of scattering amplitudes in Quantum Field Theory relevant for collider experiments such as the LHC. It focuses in particular on developing new methods to improve our understanding and handling of the infrared and ultraviolet singularities present in scattering amplitudes. The position is expected to start in autumn 2018 and is for 4 years. It includes a competitive salary and travel allowances for conferences and schools. The candidate will be employed by the NWO-I foundation and based at Nikhef in Amsterdam. The conditions of employment of the NWO-I-foundation can be found at http://www.nwo-i.nl.

Job description:
The Nikhef Theory group has an opening for a PhD student in Theoretical Particle Physics.
Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in the Netherlands. At Nikhef, approximately 175 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment. Jointly, they perform excellent theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle- and astroparticle physics. Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates in are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the Virgo interferometer in Pisa, the XENON dark matter detector in Gran Sasso and the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina. Nikhef is a collaboration between five major Dutch universities and the Nikhef research institute.
