Job description:
The Physics Department at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (South Dakota Mines) invites applications for two post-doctoral research scientist positions with its Experimental Dark Matter group. The successful applicant would work on the direct dark matter searches, LZ and/or SuperCDMS. SuperCDMS uses novel low-temperature detectors that provide even lower energy thresholds and better separation of possible dark matter interactions from backgrounds than those used in CDMS II, resulting in unique sensitivity to low-mass WIMPs. The LZ experiment will build on the success of the LUX experiment by providing world-leading sensitivity for all but the lowest WIMP masses. The SD Mines group is responsible for radon-mitigation systems and radon-emanation measurements for both SuperCDMS and LZ, and for additional low-background screening of materials during experiment assembly. The successful candidate will play a major role in the construction, testing, simulation, and analysis of one or both of the dark-matter experiments, and will help lead the construction and commissioning of more sensitive detectors for radioactive surface contamination and radon emanation, with applications to rare-event searches including dark matter and neutrino physics. Opportunities also exist to contribute to DUNE, NOvA, and IceCube. Starting date is potentially flexible, with start dates before August 31, 2018 preferred.
 
A PhD in particle astrophysics, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, or a related field is required. Experience with low-noise electronics, cryogenic systems, detector development, radiation detection, low-background techniques, data acquisition, data analysis, and/or simulations would be advantageous.
 
South Dakota Mines is an hour's drive from the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), historic home of the noble-prize-winning Ray Davis experiment on solar neutrino oscillations, current home of the LZ and MAJORANA Demonstrator experiments, and future site of LZ and the DUNE/LBNF far detector.
