Field of Interest:hep-ex, physics.ins-det, physics-other
Experiments:modular RICH and Timing Vertex Detector (initially)
Deadline: 2018-04-30
Region: North America
Job description:
The Instrumentation Development Laboratory of the University of Hawaii Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking an energetic young researcher eager to develop the enabling Integrated Circuit tools for next generation discovery experiments in particle and astroparticle physics. A world-class opportunity for mentorship and professional development while enjoying a uniquely stimulating environment. The expected start of employment is September 2017, or as soon thereafter as possible, contingent on federal funding. The position is renewable annually for up to three years, depending on continued funding and satisfactory performance.
Minimum Qualifications: We seek an outstanding, highly-motivated candidate who has a proven track-record in the development of high-performance hardware and electronics and who enjoys working as part of a larger team. A PhD in electrical engineering, experimental high-energy or astro-particle physics is required to begin employment. Demonstrated proficiency with ASIC (analog, digital and/or mixed signal) and PCB CAD tools mandatory. Experience with modern particle detectors and data analysis techniques is also strongly beneficial.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will initially take a leadership role in the development effort for the design, simulation, fabrication, assessment and fielding of next-generation System-on-Chip Application Specific lntegrated Circuits (ASlCs) and interface boards for high-rate readout of imaging Micro-Channel Plate Photomultiplier Tubes (MCP-PMTs) and/or Silicon Photomultiplier arrays (SiPM). Extensive familiarity with the Cadence tool suite is required. This challenging design requires less than 1000e- noise design for 100KHz single hit rates. Hit rate processing and low-noise specifications require ability to work with the latest deep sub-micron CMOS and bi-CMOS commercial processes. Following successful completion of this phase, a myriad of subsequent projects are available, depending upon candidate interests and experimental needs. As part of the process, travel to various conferences to present the work is foreseeable. Opportunities for travel in support of ongoing projects worldwide possible for interested candidates.
Desired Qualifications: Previous experience with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and firmware programming is highly desirable. Some experience with root, origin or similar data analysis packages helpful.
Compensation: We offer a competitive stipend, commensurate with experience and qualifications. For more information, please contact: Prof. Gary Varner (varner@phys.hawaii.edu).
To apply: Please submit a curriculum vitae, list of references, description of past research, and a list of publications, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to:
