Job description:
POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN CMS AT ULB, BRUSSELS – BELGIUM

In the context of the EOS (Excellence of Science) program in Belgium, the project  "The H boson gateway to physics beyond Standard Model" started on 1st of Jan 2018, as a collaboration among the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB-EXP - B. Clerbaux, L. Favart, P. Vanlaer and ULB-TH - R. Argurio, T. Hambye, M. Tytgat), Université Catholique de Louvain (F. Maltoni, G. Bruno, E. Cortina, C. Delaere, A. Giammanco), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) (S. Lowette, F. Blekman, J. D’Hondt, A. Mariotti), Universiteit Antwerpen (P. Van Mechelen, N. Van Remortel) and Universiteit Gent (D. Dobur, M. Tytgat).

Within this program, the ULB-EXP group offers a postdoctoral position (2 years) in CMS to start as soon as possible. The successful candidate will participate to a joint theory-experimental search for signatures of a BSM scalar sector, in particular the search for new massive scalar resonances, in connection with other themes such as the search for invisible decays or for anomalous couplings of the H boson. The candidate should demonstrate an excellent record of activity in experimental HEP, and should preferably have experience in event generators, matrix-element-based or multivariate analysis techniques. The candidate should have a PhD in high energy physics at the time of the appointment, and be in the condition of international mobility (the researcher should not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (job, studies...) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the 3 years directly preceding the beginning of the present postdoctoral fellowship).

The experimental Particle Physics Departement of the Université Libre de Bruxelles is part of the Inter-University Institute for High Energies IIHE (ULB-VUB), which combines the experimental particle and astroparticle research groups from both Brussels universities, ULB and VUB. It is involved in large international collaborations in particle physics – CMS (at the LHC), JUNO (in China) and Solid (in Belgium), and in astroparticle physics – IceCube (at the South Pole) and Auger (in Argentina). It has R&D activities in detector development and readout systems. It hosts a CMS Grid Tier-2 computing centre.

In CMS data analysis, the ULB group contributes mainly to the following research: (i) study of the electroweak symmetry breaking mainly in the ZZ and di-tau lepton final states, (ii) search for physics beyond the Standard Model (GUT, SUSY or models with extra dimensions) in particular in final states with high-energy leptons, (iii) precision measurements of multi-boson production and of jet production (perturbative and Double Parton Scattering), and (iv) search for dark matter signatures at the LHC. The group is contributing to trigger developments and central tracker data quality monitoring.
The position will remain open until suitable candidates are found. Interested candidates should apply before February 12th, 2018, when a first screening of the applications will take place. Applications should be sent by email (with subject “Postdoc in CMS – BSM scalars”) to Prof. Pascal Vanlaer via the IIHE-ULB secretariat. They should include a detailed CV, a letter of motivation and the names of 3 referees. The position is open to candidates of any nationality. The EOS consortium welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
