Region: Europe
Job description:
A fully funded PhD studentship is available in the University of Sussex Experimental Particle Physics group to work on R&D for data acquisition (DAQ) and detector development for future collider experiments. In the first part of the project, the candidate will continue the development of a monitoring system to be used in test beams for detector prototypes for future collider experiments. The system is based on the DQM4HEP package, and the candidate will add functionalities to it (monitoring plots, quality tests, etc) and work towards interfacing it with the EUDAQ data acquisition system. The second part of the project will be dedicated to R&D of a “dual readout” calorimeter, whose ability to read out at the same time the Cherenkov and scintillation light allows the correction of fluctuations in the electromagnetic component of the hadronic shower on an event by event basis. Such a prototype is being developed for use in future electron-positron colliders. Besides taking part in test beam measurements (where the monitoring package developed as part of this project will be tested), the candidate will focus on the development, upgrade, and maintenance of the detector simulation of the prototype.
Funding is available to UK and EU nationals for a September 2018 start. Funded studentships cover a tax-free bursary (£14,553 per annum in 2017/18) and home/EU fees for 3.5 years. Additional financial support is provided to cover short-term and long-term travel. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be held in February and March. We also welcome applications from self-funded non-EU students interested in our experimental programme.
For more details about the project, please contact Dr Fabrizio Salvatore: p.f.salvatore@sussex.ac.uk.
For practical questions about applications and/or eligibility for funding, please contact Rebecca Foster at: mpsresearchsupport@sussex.ac.uk
For academic questions please contact the coordinator of EPP PhD admissions, Dr. W. Clark Griffith: W.C.Griffith@sussex.ac.ukApplications: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/pgapplication
Please state in the Finance section of the online form that you are applying for STFC EPP studentships.
