Job description:
The Physics Division at Los Alamos National Lab has an immediate postdoc opening in the High-Energy Nuclear Physics team of the Subatomic Physics Group (P-25) to work on the next generation silicon pixel vertex detector (MVTX) R&D for the sPHENIX experiment at RHIC.

Our group is currently developing a program to study the modification of the heavy flavor production in heavy ion collisions using the sPHENIX detector upgrade at RHIC. This program includes both physics development and hardware R&D effort to build a 200-million-pixel vertex detector using Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) technology. Our work is leveraging the successful R&D effort of MAPS sensors and readout electronics developed for the ALICE Inner Tracker System (ITS) upgrade at CERN. The selected postdoc is expected to station at CERN for the first six months to work on the characterization and construction of the nine-chip-sensor staves for ALICE and sPHENIX, and play a major role in detector and physics simulation, as well as MVTX prototype detector R&D, beam test and data analysis later at LANL. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to join one of our group’s parallel efforts, including the on-going PHENIX data analysis, nuclear physics at the LHCb/CERN, spin physics and dark photon searches with the SeaQuest experiments at Fermilab and other applied programs in the Los Alamos Lab.

The postdoc term is for two years, with an option to renew for the third year. Outstanding candidates have a chance to be considered for the prestigious J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard P. Feynman, Frederick Reines or Darleane Christian Hoffman Fellowships at the Lab.

Desired Skills:
- experience with data analysis using C++, Shell, ROOT, Python
- experience with detector R&D and operation
- creativity and independence in scientific work in high energy nuclear and particle physics  

Education:
  The applicant is required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent in high-energy particle or nuclear physics within the past five years, or soon to be completed.
