Job description:
Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher within the Relativistic Nuclear Collisions Program.  In this role, you will analyze STAR data on high-energy proton-proton and/or proton-ion collisions, and participate in R&D towards future detector upgrades at RHIC or new instrumentation at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).

What You Will Do:

  • Analysis of existing STAR data on high-energy proton-proton and/or proton-ion collisions and publication of their results.

  • Participate in upcoming experimental campaigns at RHIC.

  • Participate in R&D towards future measurement capability at RHIC or the EIC.

  • Report results to supervisor.

  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

  • Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of own work.

  • Mentor students in their research at LBNL and UC Berkeley.


What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Experimental Nuclear or High-Energy Physics, or a closely related field.

  • Experience with modern data analysis, simulation, and computing in scientific research.

  • Proficiency in written and oral dissemination of scientific results.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration in a research environment.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Availability to travel to the STAR site and to present work at collaboration meetings, workshops, and conferences.


Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with instrumentation in Nuclear Physics and/or High-energy Physics.

  • Ability to advise and coach graduate and undergraduate student assistants in research.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
