The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Accelerator Engineer.

Description of directorate/division
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the ESS accelerator. The pulsed superconducting linac, to be built in Lund, will produce a 5 MW average power proton beam, driving the world's most powerful neutron source. The Linac Group is divided into two sections, one for the low-energy linac (normal-conducting structures) and one for the high-energy linac (superconducting structures and beam delivery). The group is responsible for managing the complete integration of the linac in the tunnel, as well as for planning and coordinating its installation and commissioning.

Description of main responsibilities
You will work as an Accelerator Engineer for the High Energy Linac. Your role will include:

  • Responsibility for the specifications for various major accelerator components, including their connections to the control system, conventional power, etc.
  • Layout and technical integration of these components within the accelerator tunnel and RF gallery.
  • Working with the appropriate Groups to develop a plan for testing, installation, and commissioning of these components.
  • To receive the planned deliverables from various Groups, and to act on reports of non-conformities.

This role will require a significant amount of communication with a wide variety of groups; beam physics, control systems, survey & alignment, conventional cooling & power, beam instrumentation, etc., as well as with multiple externally contracted groups. Negotiations will be necessary in order to achieve the required system performance.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Accelerator Physics, Engineering, and/or relevant work experience from an accelerator facility.
  • Experience with the commissioning and/or operation of particle accelerators.
  • Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
