DESY, Zeuthen location, is offering:
Multiple PhD positions (f/m) in IceCube
DESY
DESY is one of the world’s leading research centers for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. DESY at its Zeuthen location in the outskirts of Berlin is a leading center for astroparticle physics with a focus on gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy. It is a member of the IceCube experiment, the world’s largest neutrino telescope.
The IceCube group at DESY is active in a broad range of topics including:
* Measuring the diffuse neutrino flux and its flavor ratio
* Measuring the diffuse neutrino flux and its flavor ratio
* Multi-messenger studies aiming for the identification of extra-galactic neutrino sources using optical data (ASAS-SN, ZTF) and gamma-ray data (Fermi, MAGIC, H.E.S.S., VERITAS).
* Studying the particle properties of neutrinos, including neutrino oscillation and the search for sterile neutrinos
* R&D for new detector components for a planned extension of IceCube (IceCube-Gen2)
* R&D for new detector components for a planned extension of IceCube (IceCube-Gen2)
We are looking for several PhD students (f/m) to work in the IceCube group at DESY on one of the topics listed above. The position will be located at DESY Zeuthen, and is expected to lead to a PhD degree at the nearby Humboldt University of Berlin; it is subject to the admission/acceptance as a PhD student at the university.
Requirements
The candidates (f/m) must hold a Master degree in physics, astrophysics or astronomy at the starting date. Desired skills include training in particle physics, astrophysics or astronomy, programming skills and experience in data analysis or experience with hardware development. Written documentation of the performed scientific work, such as a Master thesis or publications, is expected. Proficient command of the English language is mandatory.
Applications should include the following documents in a single PDF file: Cover letter (including research interests and experience), CV (including a list of courses/grades), degree certificates and contact information of
two references. A link to a PDF of a written Master thesis (if available) or other demonstration of scientific work is appreciated.
For full consideration, the applications should be sent no later than Oct. 31, 2017 to Marek Kowalski (marek.kowalski AT desy.de) and Anna Franckowiak (anna.franckowiak AT desy.de).
