Job description:
Are you interested in taking responsibility in the CERN Control Centre for the effective and safe operation of the LHC during commissioning, regular operation and machine development? CERN, take part!

LHC Engineer-In-Charge (EIC) in the Beams Department (BE), Operations Group (OP), Large Hadron Collider Section.

The Beams Department Operations Group is responsible for the operation of all CERN accelerators. These facilities run 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for 9-11 months per year. As an Engineer-in-Charge (EIC) of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) you will take part in the daily operation and performance optimization of the world's most powerful hadron collider.

The Operations Group is responsible for the operation of the entire CERN accelerator complex, which currently consists of four Linacs, seven synchrotrons and seven experimental areas. In addition to producing the colliding beam in the LHC, the complex also supplies protons and heavy ions to varied proton, antiproton and heavy ion experimental programs. The Group is also responsible for the operation of CERN's technical infrastructure.

As LHC Engineer-In-Charge in the BE-OP-LHC Section, you will:

  • Be part of the 24-7 shift team that runs CERN's accelerator complex. During a typical LHC operation year each engineer-in-charge performs around 120, 8-hour shifts.
  • On a shift rotation, take responsibility in the CERN Control Centre for the effective and safe operation of the LHC during commissioning, regular operation and machine development.
  • You will also be required to contribute to the Hardware Commissioning and Powering Test programs which precede periods of beam commissioning and subsequent operations with beam.
  • Acquire a thorough knowledge of the various accelerator hardware systems and associated controls software, as well as the underlying accelerator physics of LHC operation.
  • Participate to the safety organization of the LHC and to aspects related to LHC performance improvements, operational procedures and controls aspects.
  • Outside of shift work, work in collaboration with the Beams Department, Acceleration Physics Group (BE-ABP) on beam optics developments for the LHC and HL-LHC.

Qualification required

Master's degree or PhD, or equivalent relevant experience, in the fields of physics or engineering, or equivalent.

The experience required for this post is:

  • The main requirement for this post is experience in commissioning or operation of accelerators or accelerator systems.

The following would be an advantage:

  • Demonstrated experience of accelerator physics.
  • Experience with control systems and data analysis techniques.
  • Experience with software engineering in a modern development language (JAVA, C++, Python).
  • Experience with MAD-X and/or SIXTRACK simulation codes.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Knowledge of accelerator physics theory.
  • Accelerator operation.
  • Accelerator performance analysis and optimization.
  • Knowledge of beam optics and single particle dynamics.

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 08.10.2017.

We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 5 year(s). Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry. Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.
