Job description:

Holders of the PhD degree in high energy physics (preferably elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics or computing method in physics) are invited to apply for a position of a Post Doc in the project “Indirect Search for Dark Matter with Water Neutrino Detectors”.The project is funded within the SONATA-BIS programme of the National Science Centre, Poland, and run by the Warsaw Neutrino Group (http://neutrino.fuw.edu.pl/). Team members will participate in the international research related to development and operation of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea (http://www.km3net.org/). Some involvement in works conducted at the Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector (2015 Nobel Prize in Physics) operated in Japan (http://www-sk.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/sk/index-e.html) is also anticipated.

The successful candidate is expected to analyze experimental data acquired by the neutrino detectors, perform and develop computer simulations chains, participate in the development of the KM3NeT telescope’s software and hardware. Specifics of the job might depend on the individual preferences of the successful candidate. The cooperation with PhD and MSc students is also a part of the candidate responsibilities.

Funding necessary to cover travel costs to cooperating institutions in Europe/Japan and costs of participation in relevant international scientific conferences/workshops has been allocated in the project budget.

Requirements:

  • PhD in high energy physics (preferably elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, computing methods in physics) obtained before November 1st  2017 and not earlier than in October 2010.
  • Very good command of written/spoken English.
  • Very good knowledge of at least one programming language (preferably C++ or Python) and the UNIX/LINUX environment.
  • Experience in working in international research team (preferably in neutrino physics).
  • Documented scientific output.
  • Analytical skills.
  • Thinking independence combined with good communication/team-work skills.

Employment Conditions:

  • 1 year employment contract (full-position) with a possibility to extend that period to three years.
  • Salary of 85 000 PLN/year gross (i.e. approx. 1 100 EUR per month after taxation). Notice the lower living costs in Poland as compared to Western Europe which allows for a comfortable living standard.

  • PhD degree diploma copy or date of the already scheduled public defense of the thesis.
  • E-mail/phone contact and affiliation data of 1-2 persons who might be requested for the recommendation letter.
