Job description:
The Institute for Astrophysics at the Georg-August-University Göttingen is looking to fill the position of

Postdoctoral Research Assistant

This position should be filled by September 2018. The regular working hours will be currently 39,8 hours per week with a limited contract of three yearsPay grade 13 TV-L.

The successful candidate will work in the research group of Dr David J. E. Marsh with a focus on Axion Cosmology. This group is hosted jointly with Profs Jens Niemeyer and Laura Covi and the successful candidate will be involved in both astrophysics and particle physics research of interdisciplinary interest.

The group of Marsh and Niemeyer is playing a leading role in the study of axion cosmology, including world-leading simulations of axion dark matter in non-linear environments, involvement with surveys including Euclid and HETDEX, and in a wide variety of other areas related to cosmological and dark matter theory.

The candidate should have a demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: axion physics, dark matter theory, dark matter direct detection, cosmological data analysis, astrophysical simulations, high performance computing, the cosmic microwave background, weak lensing, galaxy formation, particle physics.

The successful candidate should be an independent researcher capable of pursuing topics under their own initiative. In addition, they will be expected to spend up to half of their research time working on the project:

Axion Dark Matter in Cosmology and Galaxy Formation. This will involve running Monte Carlo parameter estimation, Boltzmann codes, and N-body simulations. The candidate will work on forecasts and analysis preparation for CMB-S4, Euclid,  HETDEX, and other upcoming and current surveys. Work will also be carried out to investigate the effects dark matter models and baryonic physics on structure formation on small scales and at high redshifts. The candidate should discuss their suitability for this role in their submitted materials.

The other half of the research time will be free to pursue other projects of the candidate’s choice, which should be outlined in a research proposal. In exceptional circumstances candidates with a more broad research profile will be considered, and applications are welcomed from computer scientists and mathematicians interested in cosmological problems.

The candidate will also be expected to help organize workshops, host visitors, and work with PhD students in the group.

The successful candidate will hold a highly qualified PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics or Particle Physics and have focused on research in Dark Matter and Cosmology. The applicant's willingness to work on setting up a research network on Dark Matter (including proficiency in the English language) is equally as desirable as is teaching and outreach experience and publishing results.

The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. The university has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports their employees in balancing work and family life. The mission of the University is to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.

The initial deadline for receipt of applications is 1st December 2017. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by video conference in December /January 2017, and notified of their success on or before 14th February 2018. However, applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled.

Applicants should contact David J. E. Marsh directly with all questions at marsh.postdoc.search@gmail.com. Candidates should send their application with the usual documents (CV, publication list, research plan). They should also arrange for up to three reference letters to be sent to the same address.
