PhD Position in Particle Physics Theory and Phenomenology
at Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg, Germany
The Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik (MPIK) in Heidelberg invites applications for aPhD position within theresearch group 'New Physics, Electroweak Symmetry Breaking, and Flavor', part of the high-energy theory group at MPIK. The position is embedded in the International Max Planck Research School for Precision Tests of Fundamental Symmetries (IMPRS-PTFS) in Heidelberg. The research group has a wide range of interests, exploringvarious questions in order to understand how nature can be described at shortest distances, such as
What are the exact properties of the Higgs sector?
Is the Higgs boson composed of more fundamental particles and what triggers finally spontaneous symmetry breaking?
Why are fermion masses and mixings so hierarchical and neutrino masses so tiny?
Can the fundamental forces be unified?
How could our universe emerge via baryogenesis and what is the non-baryonic ‘Dark Matter’?
which offers a broad range of dissertation topics. Analyses are carried out both in explicit new-physics models and in an effective field theory parametrization of nature. Strong connections exist also to the further lines of research of the theory group. More information can be found at https://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/mpi/en/scientific-divisions/junior-research-groups/, http://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/lin,and https://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/imprs-ptfs/ .
The Max Planck Research School offers highly qualified students the possibility to acquire skills in a variety of fields: scientists involved in the IMPRS-PTFS attack the frontiers of our knowledge on fundamental physics from all sides, be it with low-energy Dark Matter and neutrino physics, ultraprecise ion traps and storage rings, flavor physics, or with high-energy LHC physics. Both theoretical and experimental perspectives are covered in the school.
Students will be provided withmodern, solid, and broad education, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinarity and emerging synergies. Regular seminars, workshops and soft skill courses will further broaden the intellectual horizon of the students, giving them excellent perspectives for the future.
The appointment can start any time in 2017 for a period of 3 years. Applications will be accepted until the position has been filled, but should be received until 16.6.17 to guarantee full consideration. Candidatesshould submit their curriculum vitae and a statement of research intereststo fgoertz@mpi-hd.mpg.deand arrange fortwo letters of recommendation, to be sent to the same address.
