Job description:
Postdoctoral position at LAL Orsay

The Laboratoire de l’Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL) at Orsay has an opening for a two-year position as postdoctoral researcher in experimental particle physics to work on the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider

Scientific environment
LAL is the largest laboratory in High Energy Physics in France with a personnel of more than 300 people covering a rich program from particle physics to cosmology. The laboratory has a strong commitment in the LHC program with groups in the ATLAS and LHCb experiments, in gravitational waves with a group in the Virgo experiment and in cosmology participating in LSST. Thanks to its highly qualified technical groups, the laboratory is also involved in many detector and accelerator R&D projects.

Description of the position
The LAL group has been involved in the ATLAS experiment since the beginning, having proposed the liquid argon accordion electromagnetic calorimeter (LAr). The group’s major activities were in the construction of the calorimeter (mechanics, cryostat, electronics…) and of the Insertable B-Layer (IBL).  The group is now contributing to the Phase II upgrade of the new pixel detector, the electronics of the LAr calorimeters and the proposed High Granular Timing Detector (HGTD).  The successful applicant is expected to have a strong involvement in the HGTD activities in the R&D phase by characterizing the electronics on a test bench, participating in beam tests and by performing simulations. Experience in instrumentation is desirable but not mandatory. Interest in a contribution to physics analysis among the topics developed by the LAL-ATLAS group (Higgs, SUSY searches) is welcome as a part time activity.
The position will be based at Orsay about 30 km south of Paris with frequent travel to CERN. The annual gross salary will be in the range of 50 to 65 k€ depending on the experience of the candidate.

Application
Applications should include a CV, the list of the main publications and two letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters as well as the application should be sent to Laurent Serin and Dirk Zerwas (serin@lal.in2p3.fr, zerwas@lal.in2p3.fr). The deadline is June 30th 2017 but applications will be considered until the position is filled.
