Loyola University Chicago (LUC), College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Physics, invites applications for the position of Chairperson at the rank of Associate or Full Professor beginning in the 2017-18 academic year. The successful candidate will lead a department of 13 full-time faculty members, including professors, lecturers, and fulltime instructors. The department offers Bachelor's degrees in physics, theoretical physics/applied math, biophysics, and physics and computer science. The department houses a thriving dual-degree engineering program and, in collaboration with the School of Education, offers BS/MEd programs in order to prepare students to teach in high schools. The department also contributes significantly to the teaching of introductory physics courses for other STEM majors and pre-health students. Among schools with only undergraduate physics programs, LUC consistently ranks at or near the top in terms of the number of physics majors graduated annually in the United States. The chairperson will coordinate day-to-day department activities, operations, and budgeting. The chairperson will also engage in long-term planning for the department and contribute to the academic soundness of other science departments and the engineering program, currently situated in the CAS. The successful candidate also will teach courses, mentor students, and engage in scholarship and extra-departmental services as needed. Candidates should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic education, including transformative learning.
A doctoral degree in physics is required. The specialization of the incoming chairperson's research and teaching is open. Candidates should have a record of distinguished accomplishments in teaching and scholarship, which warrant an immediate appointment at the Associate or Professor Rank, and a history of successful service and collaborative leadership in administrative positions at the department, college, or university level.
