Job description:
We invite applications for an academic research position at the rank of Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of experimental astroparticle physics, in the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics (KICP) at The University of Chicago.  Applicants are required to have attained the degree of Ph.D., or must expect to finish a degree program no later than Summer of 2017, in the area of physics, astrophysics, or a related field. Three letters of reference from faculty members or senior research scientists who are active in the field of study in question are also required to complete the application.

We seek an outstanding, highly motivated candidate with interest both in data analysis and hardware. The appointee will participate in the DAMIC program, a direct dark matter search using the Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) technology. DAMIC is currently deployed at the SNOLAB underground laboratory in Sudbury, Canada. The appointee will contribute to the DAMIC operations, calibration and data analysis and will be involved in simulations and hardware developments for the planned construction of a kg-size detector. The postdoctoral position will be based at Chicago within the unique context of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics.

Previous experience in one or more of the following topics is appreciated: CCD detectors, silicon detectors, electronics, direct dark matter search experiments, low-background techniques, data analysis (ROOT) and Monte Carlo simulations (MCNP, GEANT4).

The initial appointment is for one year, renewable annually, for up to three years. Please note that the position of Postdoctoral Scholar is open only to those individuals with less than seven years since the attainment of their Ph.D. degree. There are no teaching responsibilities with this position.

Applicants should provide a brief statement of research interests and a curriculum vitae with a list of publications and preprints. Applications should be sent to Paolo Privitera, Professor at The University of Chicago and KICP, via the email address damic_search@uchicago.edu. Only electronic applications will be accepted. The applicants should also arrange to have their recommendation letters sent directly from their referees to Professor Privitera via the same email address, with the applicant's name in the subject line. The position will be open until filled. Earlier submissions will be given priority. Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protected veteran status or status as an individual with disability. The University of Chicago is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Disabled/Veterans Employer. It also participates in the Exchange Visitor Program and will facilitate the granting of visas to international applicants.
