Experiments:KEK-BF-BELLE-II
Deadline: 2017-05-31
Region: Europe
Job description:
The Laboratoire de l’Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL) at Orsay, in France, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position on the SuperKEKB e+e- collider currently being commissioned at KEK, Tsukuba, Japan. The LAL SuperKEKB group is in charge of developing a fast luminosity monitoring system based on diamond sensors, to be used as input for feedback control of the beam parameters at the interaction point of the collider. SuperKEKB is designed to reach the highest ever luminosity for the Belle-II experiment, where a high precision B-meson physics program will start in 2019. A novel “nano-beam” scheme will be used, which involves colliding the electron and positron bunches at very high frequency, with very small transverse sizes and a large crossing angle. The success of this innovative scheme requires efficient control of both the luminosity and beam induced backgrounds. Reliable monitoring systems have been designed both at KEK and at LAL, based on two complementary technologies, exploiting the large cross section of the radiative Bhabha process at vanishing scattering angle. The same systems will also serve to measure beam induced background rates from both single and colliding beam processes, complementing dedicated background measurements planned by the Belle-II commissioning group.
The post-doctoral researcher will actively prepare and implement the first luminosity measurements at SuperKEKB, planned during the phase 2 commissioning period in the first semester of 2018. The work will involve development of the reconstruction algorithms needed for the DAQ, simulation and analysis of the foreseen luminosity and background measurements, as well as definitions and preparations for upgrading the system for the Phase 3 runs with the highest luminosity, planned at the end of 2018 and in 2019.
Practical details: The postdoctoral position is funded for a minimal period of two years. It is open immediately. The starting date should not be later than October 1st, 2017, and should ideally be before June 15, 2017. The position is based at LAL (Orsay, France), with frequent visits to KEK, as well as the possibility of an extended stay during the Phase 2 commissioning. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. A first preselection of candidates will be done on April 15, 2017.
Required qualification: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in accelerator physics or in particle physics at the time of appointment and should be able to communicate in English. Experience in collider physics, background measurements and related instrumentation would be an asset.
Application: A letter of motivation outlining relevant experience and goals, a CV and at least 2 letters of recommendation should be sent to Cécile Rimbault.
