Deadline: 2015-12-01
Region: Africa

Job description:

Applications are invited for post-doctoral fellowships in the high energy theory group in the School of Physics of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Senior members of the group are Alan Cornell, Robert de Mello Koch, Kevin Goldstein, Shinji Hirano, Vishnu Jejjala, and Joao Rodrigues. We currently have eight post-docs in our group.

We have three post-doctoral openings for the 2016 academic year. One of these positions is a joint appointment with the School of Physics and Astronomy at Queen Mary, University of London. Members of the group in London are David Berman, Andreas Brandhuber, Costis Papageorgakis, Sanjaye Ramgoolam, Rodolfo Russo, Bill Spence, Steve Thomas, Gabriele Travaglini, and Donovan Young.

The successful candidate for the joint Wits/Queen Mary position would spend the first year of the post-doc in Johannesburg followed by a second year in London. The applicant must be able to satisfy immigration criteria to work in the UK. For the joint post-doc, there will be a preference for candidates who show promise for fruitfully interacting with the ongoing work on the interfaces between representation theory, integrability, and gauge/string combinatorics at Wits and Queen Mary.

The appointments are subject to approval by the appropriate funding agencies and are limited to two years. We can apply for additional sources of funding to secure an extension, but this is not guaranteed. Post-docs can expect a reasonable stipend for research related travel in addition to airfare to Johannesburg on starting.

Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. within the last five years and have shown evidence of accomplishment and independence in their research in string theory, non-perturbative quantum field theory, quantum gravity, theoretical cosmology, or phenomenology.

Further information about the positions may be obtained by e-mailing postdoc.wits@gmail.com.
