Experiments:CERN-LHC-ATLAS
Deadline: 2017-03-20
Region: Europe
Job description:
Applications are invited for PhD positions in the ATLAS group at the Center for Particle Physics of Marseille (CPPM), France.
CPPM is involved in several major projects in experimental particle physics, astroparticle physics, cosmology and interdisciplinary applications. The ATLAS group at CPPM (http://atlas.cppm.in2p3.fr) gathers about forty-five people, including seventeen staff physicists and fourteen PhD students, many with international background. The group played a major role in the design and construction of the electromagnetic end-cap calorimeters, the pixel detector and the trigger system, and pursues a strong R&D effort for planned future upgrades of the detector. Building on the group expertise with the identification of several physics objects (b-jets, electrons), current activities focus on data analyses related to the Higgs boson study and the searches for new physics.
The successful candidates are expected to work mostly on the analysis of the new 13 TeV data. In addition, the candidates will contribute to the activities related to the physics objects and the operation of the detector, and will contribute to the R&D activities in calorimetry or pixel detectors.
Each position is for a fixed term of three years, starting in October 2017, and is based in Marseille with frequent trips to CERN. The selected students will be enrolled in the PhD program of Aix-Marseille University, a top class education and research institution which is also currently the largest university in France.
Candidates should hold a degree in physics equivalent to the European Master majoring in particle physics and must have excellent academic records. Good computing and software skills are desirable. Ability to communicate in English is mandatory, French is a plus.
Candidates are invited to submit their complete application package there:
https://emplois.cppm.in2p3.fr/agc/en/session/apply/atlas-2017-phd-at-cppm and to arrange for two letters of recommendation. Applications will be accepted until March 20, 2017, short-listed candidates will be interviewed in the second half of April and final results known in early June.
Further inquiries about the group and the positions should be addressed to the team leader: Laurent Vacavant (+33 4 91 82 76 24, vacavant@in2p3.fr).
