Deadline: 2017-03-01
Region: Europe
Job description:
The group “ultracold neutrons” is seeking a postdoctoral associate to support our experimental program to probe CP symmetry via the measurement of neutron electric dipole moment.
The research project
We are part of an international collaboration conducting an experimental program to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron using the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). In this framework, the research project led by the LPSC focusses on the control of systematic effects in the next generation apparatus n2EDM, in particular those related with the mercury co-magnetometer. This system is central to the experiment and is at the origin of the dominant systematics. We are developing a dedicated experimental platform at LPSC where a UV laser is being set up to investigate various aspects of the magnetometer and perform the metrology of the mercury magnetic moment.
The laboratory
The Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC) in Grenoble, France, is a laboratory conducting experimental and theoretical research in fundamental physics, employing about 70 researchers. It is a joint laboratory between the CNRS and Grenoble University. The UCN group, with three permanent staff members, is doing precision experiments to probe fundamental symmetries and interactions with ultracold neutrons. For this project we also benefit from the collaboration of a team from CEA Grenoble specialized in atomic magnetometry.
The position
The position is funded via an ERC starting grant, for a duration of 2 years, with possible extension for two additional years.
The candidate will be expected to
