Project Scientist for Particle Detector Characterization


The high-energy physics group at McGill University invites applications for a scientist position to lead the development and operation of a particle detector characterization facility at McGill University. As part of the Phase-1 upgrade to the ATLAS detector at the CERN laboratory, large area gaseous multi-wire chambers will be built in Canada and fully characterized at McGill University, prior to their shipment to the CERN laboratory in Switzerland.
 
The successful applicant should have extensive experience in particle detector development and operation, or demonstrate strong potential to develop the required technical abilities.  As project scientist, the applicant’s responsibilities will include:
 
  • Laboratory facility development and operation.
  • Laboratory safety.
  • Day-to-day supervision of students and technicians working in the laboratory.
  • Procurement responsibilities for equipment and consumables.
  • Project management in its many aspects, such as:
    • creation and execution of project work plans,
    • development and monitoring of project timeline,
    • identification of opportunities for improvements in operational efficiency,
    • assistance in defining work tasks and
    • identification of resources needed.
  • Liaison with collaborating research groups worldwide.
  • Research work contributions in support for the upgrade of the ATLAS detector.
  • Attendance to weekly organizational and scientific collaboration-wide meetings.
  • Organization of regular local group meetings.
  • Assistance in writing of scholarly journal articles.
 
The ability to organize, set priorities and obtain results is required. The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work efficiently as a member of a large team.
Demonstrated management, organizational and administrative skills are required.
 
To qualify, the candidate should have a PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics or equivalent experience relevant to the project. The successful candidate is to be based in Montreal and will report to the Principal Investigator. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant's experience. The initial appointment is for a one-year period, renewable yearly upon mutual agreement but limited to three years.
