Deadline: 2015-12-01
Region: Europe
Job description:
The Department of Nuclear and Particle Physics (DPNC) of University of Geneva has an opening for a
Ph.D. Position in Experimental Astroparticle Physics
We are offering a Ph.D assistant position to an outstanding and highly motivated candidate to join the space experimental astroparticle physics group. Our group (Prof. Martin Pohl, Prof. Xin Wu) is strongly involved in several leading space astroparticle experiments, including the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) on board the International Space Station, the DAark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite mission to be launched in December 2015, the gamma-ray burst polarization experiment POALR, to be launched with the Chinese spacelab Tiangong2 in 2016, and the future major cosmic ray experiment HERD on the Chinese Space Station.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to acquire first hand detector hardware experience through the participation in the in-flight commissioning of the DAMPE Silicon Tracker (STK). For his/her Ph.D thesis he/she will extend the commissioning experience to the analysis of first data collected by DAMPE. The group has strong interests in Dark Matter searches, measurements of high energy cosmic rays and high energy gamma ray astronomy. The candidate is expected to complete the Ph.D program in 4 years.
The candidate is required to have or be about to obtain a Master degree in experimental particle or astroparticle physics and is capable to carry out independent research.
Interested candidates should submit their CV, a letter of motivation, and to arrange at least one letter of recommendations to be sent, by email to Prof. Xin Wu at Xin.Wu@cern.ch. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Further inquiries can be sent to the same address above.
