Job description:
The Department of Physics is a dynamic and growing academic department in the Faculty of Science at the University of Cape Town, and seeks to fill a permanent academic position at the rank of lecturer to strengthen its present research experimental activities within the ATLAS collaboration at CERN. UCT is committed to the Phase 1 Muon, and Phase 2 ITK (strips) upgrades. The university is in close proximity to the Centre for High Performance Computing, and iThemba LABS national accelerator facility.
Requirements:
• A PhD in Physics, or equivalent;
• A research track record in experimental high energy particle physics;
• Willingness to be an active member of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN and contribute to the present
responsibilities of the UCT-ATLAS group;
• A demonstrable ability to lecture at both introductory and senior undergraduate level (including service
courses and undergraduate laboratories) and give specialist lectures at Honours (4th year) level; • Readiness to supervise Honours-level, MSc and PhD students; and
• Willingness to contribute to departmental-level administration.
Selection will be informed by evidence of:
• A research track record that demonstrates recognition, experience (e.g. postdoctoral, industry), productivity and creativity;
Meaningful contributions to operations, detector development and analysis in particle physics at a collider experiment;
Success in the solicitation of funding for research; and
Teaching experience, and ability to contribute to curriculum development, and postgraduate supervision.
The annual remuneration package for 2016, including benefits, is R558 915.
