Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division has an opening for an Applied Science and Engineering Career-

Track Scientist who will be responsible for development of radiation detection technologies, specifically in gamma-ray detection and imaging employing semiconductor and scintillation detectors. Your work will be embedded in ongoing efforts at the Applied Nuclear Physics Program within the Nuclear Science Division at LBNL in close association with projects in the Nuclear Engineering and the Physics Departments at UC Berkeley. 

Specific Responsibilities:

• Establish and lead new programs in basic and applied research.

• Support ongoing efforts in the development and demonstration of new and improved concepts in radiation detection and the characterization of radiation detection systems.

• Assist ongoing efforts to support and advise federal agencies, organizations, and institutions.

• Contribute to other existing program and divisional activities related to advanced radiation detection concepts such as the GRETA and MAJORANA efforts.

• Establish new division- and lab-wide initiatives and fundamental and/or applied research and new external research collaborations.

• Expand collaboration with UC Berkeley in the areas in basic and applied research.

• Mentor students and postdoctoral researchers in their research at LBNL and UC Berkeley.

Required Qualifications:

• Advanced degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience working in nuclear instrumentation or radiation detection, nuclear engineering, experimental nuclear or particle physics. Plus at least 2 years relevant professional experience, and demonstrated expertise in modern radiation detection techniques and basic nuclear physics concepts.

• Expertise in radiation detection for nuclear security and fundamental physics.

• Proven record conducting independent research and summarizing scientific data for publication and presentation; effective communication skills.

• Ability to write proposals, obtain funding, and to perform the corresponding research.

• A strong publication record relevant to the development of instrumentation for fundamental physics and applied research.

• Demonstrated ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with hardware and software techniques for field-based radiation detection.

Notes:

• This is a 2 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

• Salary is commensurate with experience.

• This position is contingent on the successful completion of a background check.

• Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
