Research Assistant/Associate in High Energy Physics x2 High Energy Physics Group, Department of Physics, Imperial College London South Kensington Campus with some travel to Belgium Salary range: Research Assistant: £31,740 - £33,370 per annum Research Associate: £36,070 - £43,350 per annum Fixed Term: up to 2.5 years available immediately The High Energy Physics Group at Imperial College London invites applications for two Research Assistants/Associates positions to work on SoLid, a very short baseline reactor experiment at the SCK•CEN BR2 reactor in Mol, Belgium. The experiment is entering the construction of the detector systems for the first phase of the oscillation search. The work will involve supporting the construction and commissioning of the detector modules as part of the UK team and taking a leading role in the development of the analysis software and the UK data center. The Imperial SoLid group has a strong leadership in the experiment (it has the current International Spokesperson). It has a key role in building two of the five detector modules and is also focussed on measuring and reducing the backgrounds for the oscillation analysis. The Research Associate will have, and Research Assistant will be about to submit, a PhD in Physics or have equivalent professional qualifications and experience. Essential criteria for the post are: - Good problem-solving and practical/laboratory skills - A strong research record with clearly defined individual contributions - Ability to take on responsibilities in an independent manner - A proven ability to communicate with people at all levels - Experience with Monte Carlo and advanced statistical analysis techniques - Good understanding of detector operation In addition desirable criteria are: - Experience with nuclear radiation detectors and associated instrumentation - Experience of working in an internationally collaborative environment - Evidence of ability to write high quality research papers - Familiarity with machine learning techniques Work will be carried out in London and Belgium and UK/foreign travel is likely. When resident at Imperial, you will be expected to contribute to the Department's teaching activities up to approximately half a day per week during the academic year, as appropriate.
