Haverford College expects to fill a tenure-line position starting in academic year 2016-17, either in theoretical and computational physics or in experimental physics. We anticipate making the appointment at the level of assistant professor, but a more advanced appointment may be considered under exceptional circumstances. The successful candidate should be able to teach courses across the undergraduate physics curriculum and to mentor undergraduates in research. A theory and computational hire would be expected to contribute to our academic program in scientific computing, while an experimentalist should be able to teach advanced physics laboratory courses. A PhD in physics, or a closely related field, and at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience by fall 2016 are expected. Haverford is a selective college with motivated students and a commitment to both quality instruction and significant scholarship. Our Department of Physics and Astronomy has six faculty members with active research programs in computational astrophysics, observational cosmology, extragalactic astronomy, biological physics, and nanoscience. Our location three miles west of Philadelphia allows for convenient interactions with colleagues at other institutions.
Applicants should provide a c.v., research statement, and teaching statement (~2 pages suggested), and should arrange for three current confidential letters of recommendation, all to be submitted via Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/30922.) Please direct questions about the department and position to Prof. Bruce Partridge (bpartrid@haverford.edu). If you have any questions about the application process itself, please contact Georgia Davidis Malone (gdavidisma@haverford.edu). For technical questions, please contact Interfolio directly at 877-997-8807 or help@interfolio.com.
The research and teaching statements should indicate both how able undergraduates would be involved in the proposed research and the candidate’s readiness to teach a diverse student body. Applications arriving before November 1 will be given full attention.
