Job description:
Postdoctoral Associate (Center for Bright Beams), Cornell University
The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education (CLASSE) has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate to work on advanced photocathode materials for generation of high brightness electron beams for applications in accelerators physics and ultrafast electron imaging within the Center for Bright Beams. A Ph.D. or an equivalent in physics, material science, or chemistry is required.
Cornell’s Center for Bright Beams is a new NSF Science and Technology Center, which represents an interdisciplinary multi-institutional cutting-edge effort to dramatically improve the quality of accelerator beams, offering a variety of exciting research opportunities on all key aspects for beam generation, acceleration and production. The successful candidate will play a key role in operating the dedicated photocathode laboratory and will conduct research aimed at understanding the physics of photocathodes suitable for production of ultra-bright electron beams. With a multidisciplinary approach – from new materials design, to the growth and characterization of material properties, and finally to the operation of these materials in a real accelerator environment – this research aims at demonstrating production of electron beams with orders of magnitude higher brightness than the current state-of-the-art.
Applicants should have extensive experience with UHV systems, thin film growth and be well-versed with surface analyzing techniques. Some hands-on experience with lasers and familiarity with basics of accelerator physics and beam operation are desired.
Located on campus of a premier Ivy League Research University, CLASSE has a long history of excellence in various aspects of accelerator-related sciences and technology. The research will be conducted using cutting-edge tools available at CLASSE, with access to state-of-the-art facilities at Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR), Cornell Nanoscale Science & Technology Facility (CNF), and Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), as well as those of the National Laboratories.
The initial Postdoctoral Associate appointment will be for 1 year, with the expectation for renewal for an additional 2 years. Applications should be submitted at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/8095 and should include a cover letter, a CV, a publication list, and a detailed summary of research experience and interests. Applicants must arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation uploaded, as per instructions on the academicjobsonline website.
