Job description:

The Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC) at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks recent Ph.D. scientists of exceptional promise for postdoctoral fellowships in astrophysics, cosmology, and extrasolar planetary science. These positions offer opportunities to develop innovative research programs in these areas using computational, experimental, observational, and theoretical approaches. Existing research programs at KIPAC include studies of dark energy, cosmic dynamics and structure formation, probing inflation with Cosmic Microwave Background polarization experiments, searches for dark matter, and studies of black holes, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, stars (including the sun), extrasolar planets, and other astrophysical sources, as well as studies of particle acceleration in the cosmic setting. KIPAC members are involved in several cosmic surveys including DES, DESI, Euclid, WFIRST, and LSST; CMB experiments including BICEP/Keck Array, the South Pole Telescope, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and LiteBIRD; dark matter experiments including CDMS/SuperCDMS, LUX, LZ, and hidden photon dark matter searches with DM radio; gamma-ray and X-ray missions including the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, NuSTAR, and Athena; CO intensity mapping; High Energy Density Laboratory Astrophysics; and studies of extra-solar planets including the Gemini Planet Imager and WFIRST. KIPAC offers access to excellent laboratory facilities for instrument development and significant computational resources for theoretical astrophysics research and data analysis.

KIPAC typically appoints more than ten postdoctoral fellows per year. The positions offer excellent salary and benefits and are generally made for a term of three years. Up to two fellows will be appointed each year as Kavli Fellows and one as a Porat Fellow. These independent fellowships include additional funds to support research and travel expenses.

Candidates should have or expect to have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics by Fall 2017. They should possess a strong research background and provide evidence of future potential. We especially encourage applications from candidates that will diversify the workforce in astrophysics and cosmology. Applicants will automatically be considered for all available postdoctoral opportunities at KIPAC. Specific opportunities may also be listed on our webpage at: https://kipac-web.stanford.edu/new-postdocs.

Please submit your application materials to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/7609. Candidates should provide a curriculum vitae, a 3-page statement of research interests, and a publication list, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted to the same site. The deadline for applications is Monday, November 7, 2016. Late applications will be considered at the discretion of the search committee. More information about KIPAC can be found at http://kipac.stanford.edu.
