Job description:

The Particle Physics Research Centre (PPRC) in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Queen Mary University of London has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the development of software tools to analyse data from proteomics research. The PPRC has an active innovations programme to exploit the techniques and technologies developed for the high energy particle physics programme for interdisciplinary research and industrial and commercial exploitation.

The successful applicant will be expected to make a significant contribution to the development and benchmarking of software to perform fast feature finding in the large data sets produced by modern tandem mass spectrometry approaches to proteomic analysis. This will involve building on existing work, integrating tools into a full proteomics workflow to establish robust benchmarks as part of a proof-of-concept study for potential commercialisation.

The post is located at Queen Mary University of London based in the School of Physics and Astronomy, involves close collaboration with the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences and the Bart’s Cancer Research Institute and may require travel to other institutes in the UK and abroad.

The post is fixed for a period of one year and is funded by Queen Mary Innovations as part of the Life Sciences Proof of concept Fund.

The starting salary will be £32,052 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave (pro-rata), defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in particle physics or a related technical discipline, and are expected to have substantial experience in programming and numerical data analysis.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
