Deadline: 2016-10-15
Region: North America

Job description:
The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) is seeking up to two experimental Research Associates to work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The LHC presents ideal opportunities for physics at the energy frontier and experimental experience in a challenging environment of rapidly increasing luminosity. These openings allow participation in a selection of experimental areas that SLAC is involved in and a variety of physics topics at the LHC. The successful candidate may take the initial post at CERN. Information on the SLAC ATLAS group can be found on our web page http://www.slac.stanford.edu/exp/atlas/. The potential start time for this position is December 2016 / January 2017.
Current experimental areas the SLAC team is involved in:
  • Pixel detector
  • High Level Trigger and DAQ
  • ATLAS upgrade, including the future silicon tracker (ITk), the track-trigger system (FTK), DAQ, and the high granularity timing detector (HGTD)

Main physics research areas with current activities and developing interests:
  • New physics searches
  • SM and BSM Higgs physics
  • Jets, jet substructure and tagging
  • b-tagging and tracking
  • Machine learning applications
  • Trigger algorithms and strategy

The SLAC ATLAS group consists of approximately 20 people, of which 4 are currently based at CERN. We expect to strengthen our involvement in the above topics, but are open to expansion to other areas.
The physics interest of the group has a main long range theme toward searches for new physics and Standard Model measurements that enable such searches . Our physics effort also has a strong emphasis on the buildup of physics signature tools through active engagement in several physics performance areas such as tracking and b-tagging, jet and missing Et reconstruction, as well as trigger algorithms and strategies. In addition, our group has a strong and growing emphasis to analyze and reconstruct data in new ways through the application of modern machine learning tools.
The successful candidates are expected to contribute significantly to some of the following areas:
  • Physics analysis
  • Physics object reconstruction and performance
  • ATLAS detector, trigger, and DAQ operations / upgrades

Among the two Research Associate openings in this search, one is within the context of the Panofsky Fellowship and will work closely with Michael Kagan.  This Research Associate position will be expected to have some focus on the development of reconstruction algorithms and analysis methods utilizing modern machine learning techniques.

Qualifications:
These are highly competitive positions as part of the general research associate program at SLAC, requiring a background of demonstrated excellence in research and a recent PhD in experimental particle physics. The position is initially a two-year term with the possibility of renewal.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should submit their application through https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/ . The deadline to submit the application materials is October 15, 2016.

Application Material Required:
Submit the following items online at this website:
• Cover Letter
• Curriculum Vitae
• Research Statement
• Publication List
• At least three Reference Letters (to be submitted by the reference writers at this site )

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes nominations of women and minority group members.
