Job Description

The Radiation Detection & Nuclear Sciences Group at PNNL seeks a recent graduate of a Ph.D. program to contribute to its programs in applied nuclear physics for nuclear treaty support, national security, and homeland security applications. An opening exists for a position in low-background gas-filled radiation detector development, measurements, and data analysis. Strong analytical skills, good writing and presentation skills, and the ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams are required for the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university.

Position requires the ability to obtain a Q security clearance in a timely manner. U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in nuclear physics, particle physics, nuclear engineering, or related field.

The successful candidate should have a background in Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, or Nuclear Engineering. Candidates are sought to support radiation detector design, assembly, and testing. The focus of this position will be on building, testing, and operating gas-filled radiation detectors for use in the laboratory and the field. This position requires a strong technical background in radiation detection and experience with the building, troubleshooting, and operation of complex detector systems, with an emphasis on gas detectors and low-background techniques preferred. Experience with clean room and low-background measurements is desirable; experience with C++ and the ROOT analysis framework is beneficial.

This position requires the ability to obtain a federal security clearance in a timely manner. Which requires:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
