Job description:
TRIUMF is Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business. As one of the leading accelerator centers worldwide exploring the structure of matter with a variety of accelerated particle beams, our Accelerator Complex is comprised of state of the art systems which include: TRIUMF’s 500 MeV cyclotron which provides the primary proton beams that are used for the majority of TRIUMFs research programs, which consists of molecular and materials science, nuclear medicine, and nuclear physics and astrophysics; the ISAC facility which is a rare isotope beam (RIB) production and acceleration facility with the highest power driver beam in the world, producing some of the most intense RIBs of certain species; a TR13 cyclotron used in the research and production of radioisotopes for medical purposes; and in the near future, the SRF e-linac and ARIEL RIB facility which will produce exotic isotopes.

TRIUMF is currently expanding with the construction of the Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL) which will broaden TRIUMF’s (and Canada’s) capabilities to produce and study isotopes for physics and medicine. ARIEL will include a new high power electron linear accelerator as a driver for the production of rare isotopes via photo fission, and a second target for an additional proton beam line.  As we incorporate the new ARIEL facility into the TRIUMF beam delivery infrastructure and create a world-class Accelerator Operations and Beam Delivery program, TRIUMF’s goal is to evolve Beam delivery to uniform standards across all of our accelerators with common performance metrics, fault reporting, downtime statistics, electronic log books, High Level Applications, and operator training.

In support of this goal, we are currently accepting applications from highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Head of Accelerator Operations.  This position will offer the challenging opportunity of creating and implementing the vision for integrated operations while ensuring beam delivery is on time with the highest reliability and efficiency.

Your primary focus will be to provide overall leadership for the operation of the Accelerator Complex and for defining and monitoring a uniform operations environment in terms of organization, protocol, procedures, and user interface.  In this context, your ongoing responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • The safe day-to-day operation of the TRIUMF accelerators
  • Performance management, and overall guidance and coordination of all personnel within the Accelerator Operations Department
  • Periodic communications and updates to user community and other stakeholders
  • Overall responsibility of managing accelerator shutdowns using the Systematic Approach to Shutdown
  • Collaborating with accelerator physicists and other technical staff to plan and execute beam developments aimed at improved performance and enhanced capability

Your secondary focus will be to provide leadership of new projects that relate to evolution and improvement of the operations environment.  The following projects are envisioned over the next 5 years, and your goals will be to:
  • Oversee and guide the expanded use of High Level Applications at TRIUMF, defining near, mid and long-term goals, schedule, budget and resources required to achieve the near and mid-term deliverables.
  • Provide planning, conversion and transition of the Cyclotron Control System into EPICS, ensuring minimal disruption of beam delivery, while working closely with the head of the Controls Group
  • Develop an Operations model for a new operation paradigm with one common Operations Group and eventually one central control room

As the successful applicant, you will:
  • Have an established reputation as a beam delivery expert
  • Have an advanced degree in physics or engineering coupled with at least 10 years of experience in accelerator or experimental science and technology. This would include a minimum of 5 years direct experience in beam delivery or accelerator operations, including leadership of multi-disciplinary teams and project management
  • Demonstrate a recognized understanding of beam delivery, user needs, experimental physics, accelerator operations, and a functional knowledge of beam dynamics and accelerator systems
  • Possess excellent communication skills, performance management and leadership skills, and the demonstrated ability to build and foster effective working relationships and collaborations
  • Possess strong technical writing abilities, good judgement and effective problem solving skills, and the demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure of time constraints
  • Receive in-house training to be certified as TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW)

Our organization is as diverse in its areas of expertise, people, and cultures, as it is in career opportunities. We are constantly seeking dynamic team players who thrive on creativity, collaboration, excellence in service, and a busy environment. If you are one of these individuals, and this position will challeng you, then tell us why in your cover letter.

We offer:
  • An attractive and comprehensive benefits and pension plan
  • An initial starting salary commensurate with your experience level as it relates to the scope of position responsibilities
  • An excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility
Please note that while the position is open to all qualified applicants, in the case of equal qualifications, preference may be given to a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
TRIUMF is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates. Your complete application package should be submitted by email to recruiting@triumf.ca and will include the following in one complete PDF file:
Applications will be accepted until 2016-10-15
