Hamburg University invites application for several

PostdocResearch Associates in Experimental Particle Physics
(CMS experiment)

The positions commence as soon as possible. They are remunerated at the salary level TV-L13 and call for 39 hours per week. Half-time positions are also possible.The positions are initially limited to two years with the possibility of a prolongation for three further years.

The university aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and explicitly encourages women to apply. Applications of females will receive preference in accordance with Hamburg’s Higher Education Act (HmbHG*).

Our group is deeply involved in detector R&D as well as calibration and data analysis of the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. Candidates are expected to engage in the development of a new CMS pixel detector or in data analysis on top physics or searches for new phenomena related to Higgs physics, dark matter, supersymmetry or boosted topologies. Contributions to more than one of these areas are highly welcome. Interested candidates will be offered the opportunity for independent research, advanced training, supervision of students and development of teaching skills in an inspiring scientific environment.

The CMS group at Hamburg University consists of about 60 researchers.Third party funding is available through the federal initiative FSP-104 “Physics with the CMS Experiment“ by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and through the SFB-676 “Particles,Strings and the early Universe“ by the German Science Foundation (DFG). A close collaboration is established with the research groups in experimental and theoretical particle physics of DESY, which is located on the same campus.Further groups at Hamburg University are involved in neutrino physics, detector R&D, astroparticle physics, astronomy, accelerator development, nano and photon science.

Applicants are required to hold a doctoral degree in physics, to have an excellent research record and good communication skills. Severely disabled applicants will receive preference over equally qualified non-disabled applicants. The fixed-term nature of the contracts are based upon § 28 (3) of Hamburg’s Higher Education Act (HmbHG*) and § 2 of the Academic Short-Term Labor Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG).
