Job description:
Beam Diagnostics Engineer
The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Beam Diagnostics Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
You will join the Beam Diagnostics Section within the Beam Physics, Operations and Diagnostics Group of the Accelerator Division. The accelerator division is designing, constructing, commissioning and operating the 5 MW linear accelerator and associated systems for the ESS facility. In collaboration with numerous partner institutes, the Beam Diagnostics Section is tasked with the design, production, and deployment of proton beam instrumentation systems. These systems monitor the properties of the beam from the ion source through the warm and the superconducting linac, and finally through the transport lines and onto the target. They incorporate a wide range of detector, electronic, and software technologies, both custom and commercial-off-the-shelf, deployed in the challenging environment of a high power accelerator and target station.
Description of main responsibilities
- Coordinate the work of contributors from the host institute in Lund, other research institutes and industrial partners.
- Contribute to the design, construction, installation, commissioning and operation of several beam instrumentation systems.
- The initial focus will be on the beam loss monitor system that consists of ionization chambers with current readout and other detectors with event-based readout.
- The successful candidate will also be involved in several other beam instrumentation systems.
- Design and specify electronic and mechanical components
- Calibrate, integrate, and verify system performance using the EPICS-based control system and associated tools such as databases and scripting environments.
