Field of Interest:astro-ph, gr-qc, hep-ex, hep-ph, nucl-ex
Deadline: 2016-09-01
Region: Europe
Job description:
The research and PhD in physics at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) is focused on astroparticle physics. Astroparticle physics is an interdisciplinary and young research field, grown at the intersection of particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology. It addresses some of the most pressing and fundamental questions in science today: the origin and the evolution of our universe, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the study of neutrinos and of the ultimate constituents of matter, the search for gravitational waves, the investigation and explanation of the cosmic rays. These scientific topics concern directly the researches and the experiments conducted by the Italian Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) in Italy and abroad. A special attention is given to experimental and phenomenological aspects.
For the years 2016-2017, the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) offers 10 PhD positions in Astroparticle Physics. The goal is to provide the students with scientific and cultural tools to participate successfully in the research in particle physics, nuclear physics and astrophysics, high energy astrophysics, gravitation and cosmology. Moreover, the PhD students in Astroparticle Physics at GSSI will have a special opportunity to follow and participate in the research conducted at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS), with its wide community of scientists from all over the world.
The Astroparticle Physics curriculum consists of 3 years of study and research. During the first year, a large spectrum of topics will be covered by a wide choice of courses; the year will be concluded by a final exam. Students will work on a research project under the supervision of one or more professors and scientists of the GSSI, of the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory and/or of the University of L'Aquila. The GSSI encourages strongly interdisciplinary approaches to study and research, exchange of ideas and innovation.
The GSSI will provide a gross yearly salary of 16.159,91 euro, free accomodation at the GSSI facilities and use of the canteen. Recreational and cultural services will be also offered.
