Job description:
The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is a partner in the Euclid mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). The primary goal of the mission is to investigate the nature of dark energy and dark matter by measuring the accelerated expansion of the universe using different, independent methods. The Euclid satellite is expected to launch in 2020 and has a mission lifetime of 6 years. The responsibilities of the LMU Euclid group are focused on the ground segment of the mission. In particular, we are leading the efforts of reprocessing and calibrating external data from ground-based projects (including DES) and space-based projects (such as WISE) that are needed in combination with the Euclid near-IR and optical imaging to support the science analysis. In addition, we are making a major contribution to the process of merging the external data with the Euclid imaging to obtain multiband photometry of Euclid selected galaxies. We are seeking a new team member to develop algorithms and software needed for these two elements of the mission.
All applicants should have a degree in Astronomy, Physics or Mathematics (PhD preferred) and should have experience in the field of astronomical imaging surveys (preferably optical) and in the development of software in the areas object detection, photometry and photometric calibration. The efficient use of scripting and programming languages (Python and C++) is mandatory. Experience with using and managing data-management systems, databases and high-performance computing environments is a plus. Involvement in the scientific exploitation of the Euclid dataset is encouraged. We presume good communication skills in the English language and the ability and willingness to work in an experienced and highly motivated multi-national team. The contract can start immediately and is renewable through the end of the Euclid mission (currently 2028).
