Experiments:CERN-LHC-ATLAS
Deadline: 2016-06-10
Region: Europe
Job description:
There is an opening for a Ph.D. student position belonging to the ATLAS groups of Arnaud Ferrari (Uppsala University) and Stan Lai (University of Göttingen) with an anticipated start date of 01 September 2016. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a double Ph.D. degree at both universities (Uppsala and Göttingen) and be jointly supervised by the aforementioned group leaders.
The respective research groups of Arnaud Ferrari and Stan Lai are members of the ATLAS collaboration, which operates the ATLAS detector that collects LHC proton-proton collision data at the CERN research centre in Geneva. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the ATLAS collaboration, and in particular be involved in searches for beyond the Standard Model (BSM) Higgs bosons with tau-lepton and b-quark final states. Other experimental responsibilities such as studies for the ATLAS-upgrade for the HL-LHC as well as detector shifts are also expected.
As part of a four year Ph.D. program, it is envisioned that the candidate will spend the approximately the first year in Uppsala, before being based in Göttingen for the following two years (or more). The final months of the Ph.D. program will then again be based in Uppsala. Financial support will be commensurate with standard compensation for Ph.D. students in particle physics at the institute where the successful candidate is based (Uppsala at the beginning and end; Göttingen in between at TV-L E13 50%). Research stays at the CERN laboratory are also a possibility during this four year period, and opportunities for pedagogical development can also be offered.
Candidates should possess (or should be in the process of obtaining) a Master’s degree in physics or in a relevant field of study. Software and programming skills are considered essential, as well as communication skills in the English language. Prior experience in data analysis and a background in particle physics are also assets.
The application should include curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, copies of degrees attained and two letters of recommendation.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience. Qualified women are thus encouraged to apply as they are underrepresented in this field. Disabled persons with equivalent aptitude will be favoured.
