The mission of KVI - Center for Advanced Radiation Technology (KVI - CART) is to perform basic research in subatomic and astroparticle physics and application-oriented research in accelerator physics and physics in medicine. In close collaboration with the scientific community, healthcare providers and industry, we work on long-term solutions for science and society. Through the development of state-of-the-art radiation detection techniques, KVI - CART fosters the cross-fertilization between basic and application-oriented research. We educate young researchers in physics and medical technology at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels.
KVI-CART operates the superconducting cyclotron AGOR for experimental R&D in various domains of science, such as physics for particle therapy, radiobiology, detector development and radiation hardness testing of electronics components. We are currently expanding our portfolio of irradiation services with heavy-ion beam irradiations with beams up to xenon.
We are now looking for a Head of Accelerator Facility (1.0 fte) to take the responsibility for the operation and further development of the accelerator facility, which consists of the AGOR cyclotron and the experimental facilities.
Job description
The Head of Accelerator Facility:
• is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the accelerator facility, maintenance and refurbishment activities as well as for the development of the capabilities of the facility to meet the requirements of the users
• is responsible for efficient use of the financial and human resources of the accelerator facility
• is responsible for the expansion of the client portfolio for commercial irradiations
• provides expert advice on accelerator physics and technology issues to the technical staff who operates and maintains the accelerator facility
• gives direct supervision to 6.5 fte (full control) and indirect supervision to 18.5 fte (shared with other groups within KVI-CART)
• develops in consultation with the technical staff and the users of the facility plans for longer term developments
• actively participates in the international cyclotron and accelerator community.
Qualifications
· a PhD in physics, engineering or a related field
· up-to-date expertise on accelerator physics and technology, in particular on cyclotrons, is required
· initiative, inventiveness, and communication skills are important competences
· a good command of the English language (speaking and writing) is essential.
The applicants should be able and willing to work in a radiation environment and should have or quickly obtain the required qualification as radiation protection officer. Part of the work will have to be done outside the normal working hours.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a fulltime position for a year to begin with. Upon a positive performance evaluation, the appointment will be followed by a permanent position. The salary ranges form a minimum of € 3,400 to a maximum of € 5,288 (salary scale 11/12 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) gross per month for a fulltime position depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, we offer attractive and flexible secondary terms of employment such as 8% holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year and participation in a pension scheme for employees.
