Job description:
The Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP)
offers a postdoctoral research grant to work on Heavy Ion physics. The work is part of
a short-term exploratory project funded by the Portuguese Fundation for Science
and Technology (FCT), focusing on the development of novel techniques for the
study of Heavy Flavour jet production in heavy ion collisions. The candidate will be part of a team
of experimentalists in the ATLAS experiment dedicated to the study of jet production in heavy ion
collisions at the LHC and will develop techniques for the identification of the jets originate in the
bottom quark (so-called b-tagging techniques). Experience of physics analysis in this channel or
related areas will be valued but is not essential.
Requirements:
PhD or equivalent in particle physics. The candidate should have experience in particle physics
data analysis, using the ROOT analysis framework and in C++ programming in the Linux
environment.
Preferential factors:
Relevant curriculum in experimental particle physics.
Start date:
July/August 2016. The position will be for a fixed period of 1 year. The candidate will be strongly
encouraged and supported to apply for a longer term funding during this period. The position will
be based at LIP Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Dra Helena Santos.
Legislation:
A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the
“Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and
Technology” in force, (http://www.fct.pt/apoios /bolsas
/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2015.pdf) and to the LIP Grant regulations
approved by FCT, and to the Status of Scientific Research Fellow (Lei no 40/2004eracareers
de 18 de Agosto, and its successive amendments).
Value of the Grant:
The monthly amount of the grant is 1495.00€, in accordance with the
values stipulated in the “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of
Human Resources” of FCT in force.
Evaluation:
Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview, which may be made by video-conference.
The selection criteria will be the candidate's CV and its relevance to the need of the research project
(35% ), the reference letters (30% ), and the interview (35% ).

letter, a one-page statement of research interests, curriculum vitae, list of publications with direct
participation, and any other document judged to be of interest.
