Linux IT Officer
Particle Physics, Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £30,738 - £37,768 p.a.

The Sub-department of Particle Physics at the University of Oxford is seeking a Unix Systems Administrator to work as part of a team providing support for IT services.

The postholder will be a member of the Particle Physics IT support team, which is responsible for all local Linux based systems including desktops, multiuser interactive systems and two large clusters for computation. They will take responsibility for providing support to users, and software installation for those services built on top of the Linux operating system. The postholder will report to the head of the team providing Linux services and support to particle physics. The particle physics team is part of a larger departmental support group who provide more general services such as desktop computing, laptops, networking, service infrastructure etc.

The full-time contract will be for 3 years fixed-term in the first instance. The successful candidate will hold a degree or equivalent experience in a technical subject. They will have an in depth knowledge of the Linux operating system and experience of managing large numbers of systems and the tools available to assist with this including scripting languages and configuration management systems. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and experience of supporting users with varying technical backgrounds. The post will be based in Oxford.
